What Makes Part-Time God’s 2nd Edition is Special?


Part-Time God’s 2nd Edition (PTG2E) is likely the most important game I have ever designed. Since this is a game that will be coming soon to all of you, I wanted to stress that up front, and maybe give some ideas on why this game is so close to my heart.

I believe the PTG2E was the game I was destined to create. It’s the game I wanted to write first, but knew I wasn’t ready. First edition came after designing two other games and was a great trial run by a designer fresh to the industry trying his best to make an impact. It had a lot of great ideas and elements that made it one of my most successful game lines, but it wasn’t perfect. It executed the concepts but didn’t fully realize them the way I can now.

Its first edition wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, but nearly 7 years since it’s release I have come back with more experience, fresh ideas, and a new approach to game design. It’s like visiting an old friend after years apart, each of you learning who this new person is in front of you, and loving each other more because of your mutual growth.

Not only does Part-Time Gods 2nd Edition improve upon the base concepts to the game, but I have written it as a way to execute a new way of gaming. The approach isn’t anything new for me per se; it’s the way I’ve played almost every RPG I’ve ever had the honor of trying out. Now, though, these deep connections, the ability to tell compelling stories and share the game with your fellow players, have structure and have been mechanized, making them an important part of the game experience itself. I’ve never seen this kind of design in an RPG before, so I feel good about it. It’s incredibly exciting and terribly nerve wracking at the same time. I’ve put so much of my heart and soul into this game. It’s innovative and creative, bringing the same out of anyone who sits down to read/play the game.

This is a big deal for me, though. Again, it’s the game I was born to design, the game that Apocalypse Prevention Inc, The Ninja Crusade, AMP: Year One, Mermaid Adventures and the Pip System, Sins of the Father, and all my work with other companies has led to me to design. It’s all here. I’ll come out with another game next year, most likely, but it won’t be Part-Time Gods 2nd Edition. That future game will be the next, inevitable step that I must take as a creator after I fulfill one destiny and take on a new one to push me even farther.
