The Night of the Rabbit: Friv Game Overview
Rabbits are a special motive in quest-building, eternal and not aging. In the Sam & Max series , which seamlessly migrated from LucasArts to Telltale , the eared beast played a major role. In Edna & Harvey from Daedalic Entertainment is an animal also proved, if not at first, then at least not in the last place. Friv games play online at this website http://www.friv3-games.com/. Now the developers of the studio again took up the "rabbit" theme - already with the filing of independent developer Matt Kempke (Matt Kempke). Independent until Daedalic became interested in The Night of the Rabbit, which we had the opportunity not only to “touch” with our hands, eyes and brains, but also to discuss with the main ideologist, mastermind, screenwriter and game designer during his pre-release visit to Kiev.
is to blame . It was he who introduced the fashion for strange rabbits, opening the way for heroes to the world of wonderful schizophrenia. Only if young Alice climbed into the rabbit hole, not suspecting what she would find there, then Jerry Funduk - the protagonist of The Night of the Rabbit - from a young age clearly knew what he wanted. In terms of even more youthful than at the time of the start of history. After all, this smart guy in a cylinder is only twelve years old, which in itself is bold enough for a project designed not only for children. But back to our rams, which are rabbits. Jerry dreams of becoming a magician. Every night he falls asleep with this thought and one fine day receives a magic letter from Hogwarts, in which he is recommended to conduct a series of ritual actions in order to call a "friend".
And a friend comes - white, eared, with red eyes and in a tailcoat. The anthropomorphic rabbit appears to be the Marquis de Hoto, claims that he is a wood-walker, able to go through portals between worlds, and invites our hero to go to his disciples to become a real wizard. Jerry naturally agrees and ends up in an amazing town called Mousyles.
Here, in fact, not only mice live, but also squirrels, and mole, and hares - in general, a complete set of rodents, slightly seasoned with owls and frogs. Talking little animals are preoccupied with all sorts of minor matters - either they didn’t deliver the package to the squirrel on time, or the popular drink “blue juice” in the whole village ended. The young apprentice of the sorcerer carries out minor tasks and gradually realizes that he does not understand anything. Who is the mysterious Zaroff who is about to come to Mouseland? Why is it that here and there huge impudent crows appear, which the local inhabitants are afraid of? And in general, does it only seem that way, or do the dear inhabitants of the magical land constantly keep silent about something?
“The coincidence of the plot introductory with the beginning of Carroll’s tale is not a coincidence, in fact,” says Matt, “but if Alice’s meeting with the rabbit is an accident, then in The Night of the Rabbit the opposite is true: the rabbit initially had a plan. Pay attention to how he watches the boy through the window at the very beginning of the game. It looks creepy. Why is the Marquis de Hoto watching the baby? ”
Matt does not hide the fact that in The Night of the Rabbit the main value is the plot. And indeed - sweet, childish, charmingly naive at first, this story, as it develops, acquires the features of noir and mysticism, becomes gloomy and dramatic - within a reasonable framework, of course.
In general, the prologue could have alerted us already. Even before Jerry appeared on the scene, we see a strange creature in a shamanic mask and some unfortunate, confused rabbit in the middle of a foggy swamp. A masked one only lets the fog go even further - he broadcasts about some “beginnings” and “ends”, and then sends his white guest straight to the start of the main story.
The Night of the Rabbit seems even more "old school" than other Daedalic games. If we are accustomed to a deliberately two-dimensional landscape, then LucasArts- style animations and two or three maximum character poses look amazing for a modern game building. Knowing the capabilities of the studio, we dare to assume that this "minimalism" is not a flaw, but a concept. First of all, Kempke himself says that LucasArts is the ideal of adventure development for him. Secondly, each location, each screen in a sufficiently large Mousyles is traced in such detail and lovingly that it would be strange to suspect the team that created such landscapes and interiors in the inability to work with facial expressions of characters.
It's funny that the feeling of playing from the "golden age" of adventure is combined with a very democratic interface and gameplay. We are talking about the usual point-and-click, but instead of the familiar “coin” with several possible actions, we are offered a cursor-list and work with all objects with just one left mouse button. Simply put, any action in The Night of the Rabbit is carried out in one click.
Jerry stores things, pieces and rubbish Treasures, collected in the open spaces of other worlds, in an unusually round inventory. For developers, it was important to fit all the items on one screen, so we don’t have to scroll through anything to find some shimmering snail picked from a giant beet some time ago.
Find something found, okay. But what to do next with her? The answer usually does not have to be looked for too long - there is always logic in local problems. Sometimes it’s very sophisticated, as is the case with the same snail: how can you guess that this small creature will become an instrument for penetrating with a “hack” into a house where they are not really waiting for us? However, it’s worth a little brainwash, and we begin to understand what is needed of us. At the same time, solving a lot of tasks in the best traditions of Daedalicrequire us not just a combination of objects, but thoughtful communication with the characters. It is not only a matter of “things, things and trash”, as Mr. Church Mouse says about his goods.
So we came to the most pleasant thing - to talk about the characters. There are many of them. A part of the game world, accessible to our hero at every stage of advancement in the plot, is notable for its size: so, literally immediately after getting into Mousyles, we can move around the whole city. And in each location, on each screen there are one or two, and sometimes three NPCs.
All of them are beautiful in their own way. The merchant already mentioned by us - Mr. Church Mouse - cannot stop talking about his future heir, the plump Younger, an eternally silent creature, for whom the unlucky seller of “things, pieces and trash” for some reason has great hopes. Mole Ludwig - the voice of the local radio - continues to habitually utter advertising slogans even after the closure of this radio itself. Having caught a cold, the gnome transparently hints at Jerry the only ... mouse that can help him with the disease, but immediately proudly reports that the gnomes never turn to anyone for help. Each "muscular man" literally in two or three phrases shows a certain unique character trait, and sometimes the whole character as a whole.
The Night of the Rabbit makes a very good impression. This game is fundamentally different from Deponia , Edna & Harvey and even from The Dark Eye . Remember the dreamer-losers opposing the world? Until now, it was this particular motif that was constantly put forward in the first place in the works of Daedalic .
There is no such confrontation. The hero does not have to gnaw his teeth out under the sun among the limited and evil inhabitants. The inhabitants of Mousyles are cute, kind, truly fabulous creatures. Maybe this project does not have the fireworks of humor that we are used to in the Daedalic adventure games , but here, without a doubt, the atmosphere of a fairy tale has taken root.
This is not to say that The Night of the Rabbit is completely deprived of jokes. There is humor, but it is different here - not the same as in Deponia . Perhaps more restrained. On a post with announcements, for example, there is a leaflet with the inscription “my neighbor complains of noise at night. Please, make noise even louder, that’s what he needs! ” And the signature is “Anonymous.”
There are a lot of jokes here - built on a play on words or on references to other entertainment projects. Say, when Jerry helps the frog Plato with mail, he has to bring one of the characters a letter from a certain M. Calavera. Those who played Grim Fandango will smile knowingly.
Matt continues to say: “In addition to referring to other Daedalic games and not only we hid bonus content in the game. So, Jerry can find playing cards that depict spells or characters that play an important role in the whole story. There are still drops of some magical essence; if you collect them all, it will give you access to one very important plot twist much earlier than it should be “on schedule”. In addition, you can find eight audio stories and learn a little more about the area you are in. ”
